Outcomes & Objectives
The key objective of the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program is to increase participation in surfing and stand-up paddle boarding at a grassroots level and educate young surfers and paddlers about all aspects of our ocean environment.
By encouraging our younger generations at an early age to participate in a sport such as ours, they will quickly begin to understand and share in a really important part of our Australian culture.
Furthermore, by incorporating vital water awareness and beach safety advice into practical surfing and stand-up paddling tuition, students realise for themselves just how important water safety is.
With the challenge of learning a new sport in a natural environment and gaining a real understanding of the ocean environment, students begin participating in a healthy lifestyle, whilst also having fun and learning how to save lives.
5 SURF skill levels and 3 SUP skill levels have been developed for the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program.
Weet-Bix SurfGroms Outcome
When a Weet-Bix SurfGrom has completed the 5 surf skill levels attached to the program, they will be able to surf independently of the need for supervision, in 3-4ft conditions or smaller safely and will not pose a hazard to themselves or others in the water with them. They will also have a strong understanding and ability in:
- Recognising different surf conditions and hazards
- Surf survival and basic rescue skills
- Basic first aid skills related to the beach and the surf
We expect that the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program will significantly increase participation in surfing at an early age, and increase Australia's talent pool of young surfers to soon go one and become Australian world champions of the future!
